9 Ways to Embrace the Winter Solstice and Celebrate the Longest Night

As the chill of winter settles in and the days grow shorter, we approach a significant celestial event: the Winter Solstice. This moment, which marks the longest night and the shortest day of the year, is not only a fascinating astronomical occurrence but also a time rich with symbolism and tradition. Let's delve into what the Winter Solstice is, what it represents, and explore some activities and rituals to honour this special time.

What is the Winter Solstice?

The Winter Solstice occurs when one of Earth's poles has its maximum tilt away from the Sun. For those in the Northern Hemisphere, this usually falls around December 21st or 22nd, whilst for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, Winter Solstice falls on June 21st or22nd. On this day, the Sun travels the shortest path through the sky, resulting in the longest night and the shortest day. Conversely, in the Northern Hemisphere, this marks the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. This year is particularly potent as Solstice also falls on a Full Moon!

Astronomically, the Winter Solstice signifies the return of longer days and the gradual march toward spring. Culturally, it has been celebrated for millennia by various civilisations, often as a time of rebirth and renewal.

What Does the Winter Solstice Represent?

The Winter Solstice is a powerful symbol of cycles and transformation. It represents:

  1. Rebirth and Renewal:

As the darkest day of the year, the Winter Solstice signifies the rebirth of the Sun. Many cultures view this time as a period of new beginnings and hope, as the days start to lengthen again.

  2. Reflection and Introspection:

The long night encourages a time of quiet reflection. It is an opportunity to look inward, evaluate the past year, and set intentions for the year ahead.

  3. Celebration of Light:

Many traditions incorporate the theme of light, celebrating the return of longer daylight with candles, bonfires, and festive lights.

Activities and Rituals to Honour the Winter Solstice

There are numerous ways to celebrate the Winter Solstice, each fostering a connection to nature and our inner selves. Here are some meaningful activities and rituals to consider:

  1. Create a Winter Solstice Altar:

Set up a special space with symbols of the season – evergreen branches, holly, pine cones, and candles. Add items that represent your intentions and goals for the coming year.

  2. Light Candles or a Bonfire:

Fire is a powerful symbol of the sun and light. Gather with friends or family to light candles or a bonfire, sharing your hopes and aspirations for the year ahead.

  3. Meditate or Reflect:

Use the darkness of the longest night as a time for meditation or quiet reflection. Consider what you want to release from the past year and what you wish to invite into your life.

  4. Spend Time in Nature:

Take a peaceful walk in the winter landscape, appreciating the stillness and beauty of nature during this time of rest and renewal.

  5. Feast and Celebrate:

Prepare a special meal using seasonal foods. Sharing a feast with loved ones is a traditional way to honour the solstice, celebrating the abundance of the past year and the promise of the new one.

  6. Set Intentions and Make Wishes:

Write down your intentions or wishes for the coming year. You can burn these as part of a fire ritual, symbolizing the release of your desires to the universe.

  7. Practice Gratitude:

Reflect on the past year and make a list of things you are grateful for. Gratitude can shift your focus and help set a positive tone for the year ahead.

  8. Create a Vision Board:

Gather images and words that represent your goals and dreams for the coming year and arrange them on a board. This visual representation can help manifest your intentions.

  9. Do a Card Reading:

A tarot card spread for the Winter Solstice can be designed to reflect on the past year, embrace the present moment, and set intentions for the future. Here's a "Winter Solstice Reflection and Renewal" spread that you can use:

Winter Solstice Reflection and Renewal Spread

    1. The Longest Night: What darkness or challenges have I faced this past year?

    2. The Hidden Light: What inner strength or hidden potential did I discover?

    3. The Present Moment: What should I focus on right now?

    4. The Returning Light: What new beginnings or opportunities are on the horizon?

    5. Setting Intentions: What intentions should I set for the coming year?

    6. Guiding Star: What guidance or advice do I need to follow my path?

    7. Renewal and Rebirth: What can I let go of to embrace renewal?

The Winter Solstice is a profound reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the promise of renewal. By engaging in rituals and activities that honour this time, we can align ourselves with the rhythms of nature, finding meaning and inspiration in the darkest part of the year. Whether you choose to reflect quietly, gather with loved ones, or set powerful intentions, celebrating the Winter Solstice can be a beautiful way to welcome the return of the light and the possibilities it brings.

This week starts with the Moon still in its Waxing Crescent. When the Moon is waxing, it appears to be getting bigger- the energy that accompanies this is expansive and there will be an increase in your energy.

You might find it useful to refine your plans so you can confidently move forward with them on Wednesday’s First Quarter Moon phase. The rest of the week will see us with the Waxing Gibbous Moon, building up to the Full Moon!

Things might be feeling pretty wild right now as there is a grand air trine of planets starring the Moon in Gemini, the Sun and Mars in Libra and Saturn retrograde in Aquarius. This is a positive configuration but could feel intense too! Another word of warning- Mercury goes retrograde today for the next three weeks. Back up your computers, be mindful of technology and transport and be careful in your communication at this time!

Turning to the Moon, this week kicks off with the Waning Gibbous Moon in the sign of chatty Gemini. On Wednesday the Moon will be in her home sign Cancer in the Third Quarter phase. At that phase of the lunar cycle that I feel a noticeable shift in my energy levels (to that of realllllly going slow!) and it’s also here that frustrations and un-easy feelings can arise.

I can’t believe that we will be on October this week- where did September fly by?! We are also now fully into Libra Season, an air sign that is all about peace, harmony and balance and gives us a chance to analyse our relationships in particular. It can also be the season where we might feel indecisive and more diplomatic than usual.

In this Waning Moon week, it is good to focus on reflecting, restoring and preparing for the New Moon. The Libra New Moon will be on the October 6th, and brings it a fresh new start and the chance to set or revisit your intentions and goals. How great it is that we have this opportunity every month!

How are you going with your Moon wishing and manifesting? Did you harness the increased energy of the past week to start taking inspired action on making your New Moon intentions? Are they still feeling aligned?

I’m personally excited about this week ahead, for the high energy ad focus that it will bring for me to focus on my intentions and projects. It is also my son’s birthday this week, and he has been counting down sleeps for weeks now, so there is definitely an excited vibe in the air around here!

Enjoy the energy this week because next week, it’s not only a Full Moon, but there are also some other powerful astrological transits, as well as Equinox (Mabon/Ostara), which will really make things feel a lot more intense!

Let’s look now a bit more closely at what to expect from the lunar energy and mood this week!

This week kicks off with the Third Quarter Moon phase in the sign of chatty Gemini. It is at this phase of the lunar cycle that I feel a noticeable shift in my energy levels (to that of realllllly going slow!) and it’s also here that frustrations and un-easy feelings can arise.

This week it is a particularly tricky lunar transit, because the spotlight tends to be put onto out limiting beliefs and negative patterns- which can make this a great time to release and let go. Usually, a Gemini Moon would be the time for us to want to socialise, but weight just not be feeling that usual tendency, being called to reflect and go inwards instead.

If you are feeling this, it could be because we have 6 major planets all in retrograde at the moment- the cosmos is really wanting us to takes some time to re-evaluate our lives, fine-tune our habits and focus on letting go of what we need to have a positive mindset.

We are also now fully into Virgo Season, an earth sign that is perfect for cleaning, organising, de-cluttering and focusing on healthy habits and committing to your overall well-being.

This week, you should be focusing on reflecting, restoring and preparing for the New Moon. The Virgo New Moon will be on the 7th September, and brings it a fresh new start and the chance to set or revisit your intentions and goals. How great it is that we have this opportunity every month!

I will be running a New Moon circle on Sunday night so that we can set powerful New Moon intentions together. If you would like to be part of it, come join us in the Moon Membership and also get access to the PDF playbook which includes deeper astro info about the New Moon, journaling prompts, rituals, recipes and self-care practices.

I’d love to know what’s happening for you and how you are feeling as we close out this lunar cycle. Hit reply and let me know- I love to hear from you!

How was your Full Moon yesterday? Did you take some time to gaze at the Moon, do your Full Moon Mapping and complete a release ritual?

I sat on the beach near my house as the sun was setting and the beautiful Full Moon was rising. I was really chuffed that several other people had also come down to the same spot to watch the Moon too. I took my journal with me to write out all the doubts, fears and limiting beliefs I want to let go of and then I wrote these down and burned the paper during the Full Moon circle that I ran for the Moon Membership. I felt so much lighter afterwards!

I’d love to know what you have released and let go of on this Full Moon- hit reply and let me know!

This week begins the Waning Moon phase of the cycle which gives us a chance to begin to slow down. The past two weeks have been heavy and intense and it is nice to have this opportunity now to integrate and recalibrate our nervous systems with the shift in energy.

I love this about living my life being guided by the Moon and her natural rhythms.

If you want to learn more about how to do this, watch this free on-demand video workshop where I share all about how to harness the energy of the Moon for more alignment and flow.

Things will be building up and the energy intensifying this week as we move closer to Sunday’s Full Moon, which is also a Blue Moon in Aquarius. This is what we call it when there is a second Full Moon in a season- this is a fairly rare event that only happens every couple of years. It’s also the second Full Moon in a row in the sign of Aquarius. I’d love for you to join in the online Moon Circle on Sunday night where we I will guide us through a meditation, share more about the Aquarius Full Moon astrology, share some journaling prompts to do together and to then do a release ritual together.
